WORKING WITH ADULT ABUSE SERIES

This Series has been developed to meet the training needs of anyone who might be working with or who has contact with a vulnerable adult, that is anyone aged over 18 who has a physical, learning or sensory disability, a mental health problem or an older person. The series includes DVDs/Videos to look at all aspects of working with both survivors and perpetrators of abuse. A separate Training Manual “Working with Adult Abuse “ can be purchased to use in conjunction with the DVDs/Videos

WAA1: What is Adult Abuse? (50 minutes) - DVD £118.50; Video £20.50

Many people are still unaware that adult abuse exists in our society. Abuse is probably much more common than is generally acknowledged. It is imperative that anyone working with a vulnerable adult develops an understanding of what constitutes adult abuse and this is the main aim of this DVD/Video.

Abuse can be inflicted on a person in all sorts of different ways; many of which are very subtle. Workers need to have knowledge about the six categories of abuse - physical; sexual; emotional/psychological; financial/material; neglect/acts of omission; discriminatory - which can happen in the community or in institutions.

The DVD/Video can be used to introduce the subject of adult abuse to a wide range of workers across the sectors - statutory, voluntary and independent. Case studies are used to illustrate the different forms of abuse. The DVD/Video also contains learning points, discussion questions and exercises.

WAA2: Recognising Adult Abuse (50 minutes) - DVD £118.50; Video £20.50

It can be extremely difficult to identify adult abuse for many different reasons and consequently abuse can often remain well hidden. It is imperative that workers who come into contact with vulnerable adults need to have in-depth training on the signs and symptoms of abuse.

Through the use of case studies this DVD/Video focuses on how a worker may recognise adult abuse. It explains where, when and how abuse may happen, but also emphasises the point that it is wrong to stereotype the survivor and the perpetrator.

The DVD/Video can be used for basic awareness training in work settings across the sectors (statutory, voluntary and independent) or to supplement more advanced training courses. The DVD/Video contains case studies, learning points, discussion questions and exercises.

WAA3: Investigating Adult Abuse– 2 Set DVD/Video (76 minutes) - DVD £237.00; Video £41.00

This two-DVD/Video set considers what is involved in undertaking an investigation into adult abuse when there is a suspicion, allegation or disclosure. Workers can be apprehensive about the implementation of an adult abuse policy and procedures for many different reasons. They may be unfamiliar with the policy and also lack confidence – believing they do not have the appropriate skills to undertake an investigation.

The main objective of this DVD/Video set is to help all workers understand the framework and processes involved in an investigation. Some workers may think that they would never be involved in an investigation. The case studies illustrate that everyone can have a role to play. All the stages of an investigation are given attention - alerting, planning an investigation, interviewing - together with the dilemmas surrounding confidentiality and sharing information.

DVD/Video 1 presents the framework and processes which should be followed through an investigation with an emphasis on what constitutes good practice.

DVD/Video 2 presents 5 case studies, which help to put the framework discussed in Video 1 into practice.

The roles and responsibilities of workers and managers from different agencies and organisations are clearly explained and illustrated in both videos.

WAA 4: Case Conferences (57 minutes) - DVD £118.50; Video £20.50

The case conference is a vital stage in the adult abuse investigation process. However, sometimes conferences are not convened as they should be. The aim of this DVD/Video is to explain in a straightforward way the purpose of case conferences, how to convene and contribute to them successfully. The DVD/Video is targeted at professionals and workers at all levels because anyone who works with a vulnerable adult may be invited to attend a case conference.

Workers can be confused about the difference between a strategy meeting and a case conference. This is explained clearly and the purposes of both forums explained. After discussing the purpose of a case conference, the video explains how a case conference is convened. This is done by looking at the tasks which need to be performed by the investigating officers together with the manager of the abuse investigation. Practical guidance is also given regarding the administration and facilitation of these conferences

Preparation is the key to good practice. The DVD/Video looks at how to prepare both a worker and a victim for a case conference. It will demonstrate through simulations how a conference should be chaired, how workers should contribute relevant information to a conference and what behaviours are appropriate. The needs of the victim during a conference are also highlighted. The importance of risk assessment, the development of protection plans and review case conferences are also discussed.

This DVD/Video can be used in conjunction with the DVD/Video Investigating Adult Abuse (WAA3) or it can be used alone to help managers and workers contribute effectively to case conferences.

WAA5: The Abuse of Older People – 2 Set DVD/Video (90 minutes) - DVD £237.00; Video £41.00

This two DVD/Video set focuses on the abuse of older people both in the community and in other settings. Elder abuse was first recognised way back in the 1970s but even thirty years on the subject area still does not get the attention it deserves. The prime aim of this video set is to raise awareness about abuse amongst workers across the sectors who have any involvement with an older person.

An older person may be deemed to be a vulnerable adult so the video presents information regarding the important guidance from the Department of Health No Secrets (2000) and how workers should be aware of local multi-agency policies and procedures on vulnerable adults and adult abuse. Definitions and categories of abuse are discussed through the use of case studies, which illustrate the obvious forms of abuse as well as the more subtle ways in which abuse can be inflicted. Attention is also given to who can be a victim, who can abuse and the causal factors of abuse.

The DVD/Video set contains case studies, learning points, discussion questions and exercises.

DVD/Video 1 presents the theory regarding elder abuse and 5 case studies based in the community.

DVD/Video 2 considers institutional abuse and presents 3 case studies in a care home.

WAA6: The Abuse of Black and Minority Ethnic People (75 minutes) - DVD £118.50; Video £20.50

Knowledge about the abuse of black and minority ethnic people is limited for a number of reasons; one being that very little research has been undertaken. However, it is known that adult abuse can happen anywhere, that is, different forms of abuse are likely to happen in all communities. Therefore, it is important to give this subject area some attention from the knowledge we have already gained.

Workers across the sectors need to consider what they would do if they suspected or found that a minority ethnic person was being abused. Through the use of seven case studies, viewers will be introduced to the different forms of abuse. Also, the case studies clearly portray the fact that it is wrong to stereotype – male and females can be victims or abusers.

Although the main objective of the DVD/Video is to raise awareness about abuse which could happen in different minority ethnic groups, the viewer is also made aware of the Department of Health’s guidance No Secrets and the importance of local policies and procedures on vulnerable adults and adult abuse. Consequently, the viewer will be taken through definitions of abuse but also taught about what constitutes good practice.

The DVD/Video contains learning points, discussion questions and exercises.
